I’m having such a s**t time at work at the moment. I’m looking forward to getting away from it to see bf, though that’s always tinged with a sense of apprehension over whether he’ll be sober when I arrive or any other time. I sent him an email making him promise he will be.
Then again I don’t know what sort of (medical) condition he’s in at the moment - it could be quite bad. That will be difficult to deal with too.
What a life.

Someone arrived at my site in search of an answer to the question everyone’s asking: Did Mondrian have a pet?

I’m really not looking forward to next week, to be spent almost in its entirity in the other office. This means getting up early, followed by an hour’s travel each morning (and back again). The thought of being away from it all for two weeks is what will sustain me.
Just finished watching the BBC 2 programme “With Friends Like These”, which analyses Britain’s relationship with other countries. This week it was Germany. Quite interesting but still seemed to have a sort of ‘perfidious Germans’ attitude to it. I noticed all the German participants came out of it with a sense of dignity, whereas the British ones almost became apologists for our country’s behaviour over the years.
Also, it reminded me of school where one of my best friends was German and some of the xenophobic abuse he had to put up with made me sick to my stomach (and this was Warwickshire!). I’ve always had a sensitive attitude to xenophobia and other other nationalities since then, which I suppose explains why I very much consider myself a European and have always been a supporter of the EU. It’s safe to say I despise this country’s continuing negative view of Germany, which I think masks a lack of self-confidence and feeling of being second-rate extension of US hegemony more than anything else.
(Trivia: I learned German at school rather than French and, by co-incidence, so did my Mother).

Just come across an independent United Nations news site: UN Wire. More comprehensive and more focussed than the UN’s own news site. I’ve subscribed to their email service.
Tomorrow will be given over to buying presents for bf. Hopefully the weather will hold - it’s looking rather overcast at the moment.
Buy a comfy cat.

Apparently it’s officially Autumn and wouldn’t you believe it? The temperature has just plummeted in the past few days - it’s been freezing cold. I wonder how long it will take my brain to register my body shouting at it “stop wearing just t-shirts and put on a ****ing jumper!”.
Stopped off to see Denise and give her a CD of hooj choons. As usual we spent all our time discussing interior design. Oh, for a big house and lots of money…
Bumper sale in Iraq! Everything must go! (to American corporations).

Fortunately bf wasn’t upset and he’s looking forward to seeing me. I can’t wait, especially as my boss has told us we still have to get the project done by the ridiculous deadline. When he started talking about no limits on overtime my heart sank. I’m glad I’ll be out of it for at least two weeks (I still can’t believe he let me go!).
Bit of drama this evening: I spent today at the other office with one of my colleagues whom I gave a lift there and back. Half-way home she started feeling sick and we had to stop in the middle of nowhere while she threw up. She was in quite a state and I thought I was going to have to call an ambulance. Anyway we managed to make it home (notwithstanding a couple more stops) and after some effort got her back to her flat. I was very worried as she could barely stand up, so I called one of her friends who’s going to keep an eye on her thankfully. Given how sudden it came on, I suspect food poisoning.

Shock horror - my leave application was accepted! I should be flying out on 6th October. Not much time to arrange stuff and buy presents. Bf sent an email - he wanted to come and visit me (i.e. me pay for it) but I told him I’d sorted it already. I hope he isn’t too upset.
After listening to all the crap spouted by the meeja about whether the Lib Dems are on the left or the right, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s journalists themselves who are at least half-way to blame for the lack of informed understanding of politics. Ordinary people don’t essentially care about where a party is on the political spectrum; they’re more interested in whether they can get treated in their local hospital, rather than the ideology behind its management.
The problem with trying to pin a ‘leftist’ tag on the Lib Dems is journalists would immediately caricature any of their policies in terms of: You’re on the left so you’re a high tax party, which obscures any real analysis.

Yesterday, Denise, Valentina, Daryl and myself went tootling around London looking inside otherwise ‘hidden away’ buildings as part of the London Open House weekend (from Council of Europe’s European Heritage Days initiative).
We visited St Pancras Chambers, the ITN building, City Hall (with its cool, winding staircase) and Lloyds of London (with its cool escalators). This was about as much as we could manage in one day. As an aside we also popped into the British Library and had a look at Trafalgar Square now it’s been pedestrianised in front of the National Gallery.
Without a doubt I was knackered by the end of it all. There’s more than can be seen in one day, so maybe it’s another reason I should get fitter (and thinner).

They may have been around for a while but I’ve only just come across them: the EPolitix and EUPolitix sites. Both look promising. I shall follow them closely.
Sent bf another magazine today (the BBC Food magazine). He likes cooking and is an excellent cook, even when putting up with the limited range of food I can cope with.

Bf seems to be doing fine. He liked the magazine I sent and wanted to know how I am. Apparently he ‘worries about me’. It’s nice to think that someone in this world does. I WANT TO SEE HIM NOW!!!
Some Radio 4 programmes I must find time to listen to (streamed, that is):
- United Nations or not?, the past, present and future of the UN.
- The Commission, all about the Human Rights Act.
