Forgot to mention that my MP finally answered with a standard letter, i.e. standard in the sense that it appeared to be the same for all people who wrote to her on this subject (I know that for a fact because Daryl got the same). Recently I emailed one of my MEPs, a Labour one. He never replied. So much for democracy. At least I have more MEPs to choose from.

It’s raining but still hot out. One thing I won’t miss is nearly getting run over practically every day walking to/from work in Guildford. For all their apparent faults I’ve found drivers in the US (well, Madison anyway) that bit more considerate.

More stuff moved out Saturday. I’m on basic rations with only clothes, a toiletries bag and digital TV. It’s been hot over the weekend.

Bought a copy of EuroBusiness Age for a laugh and regretted it almost immediately. If anything it’s got worse. Articles that look like they were only written to get the author an overseas jolly, other corporate ones that feel more like they were written by the companies they’re covering. Tiresome.

Bought some more books for the plane, including Alan Clark’s Diaries (which I’ve read before). I find them captivating, even though I could never stand the guy. I’ve read half of it already.

Spoke to the company that does inventory checking for the letting agency. They wanted me to be around for the ‘check out’ but I’ll have gone by them time they’re ready - my departure is not a movable feast.

Busy week both at work (team leader handover) and at home (cleaning). I hope it doesn’t rain when I want to do the windows. That would make me grumpy.

Back in communication with boyf. Phew! Life will be so much simpler when I’m there and I won’t have to keep second-guessing his condition.

Apparently his apartment will have new carpets by the time I arrive. The old ones were full of catnip.

Went out for dinner with Denise in Godalming, after first setting up internet access on the iMac I lent her. Then, on the way home by train, I decided to get off at Farncombe (one stop) and walk the rest of the way back to Guildford. Here I am - four miles and one and a bit hours later and I’ve no idea why I did it. The good thing is I’m not in the slightest bit knackered.

I feel good now.

Haven’t heard from boyf for over a week. This time I’m really worried.

Pace have finally activated interactive services on the DTVA. Sort of like a hi-tech but scaled down version of teletext. I do like the little ‘picture in the corner’ effect though.

I really need to get myself organised and sort out what I’m going to take and pack up the rest. Motivation deficit - I think I need to drink more water.

Fun day with Valentina. The weather was so nice (at first) that we went shopping and had a late lunch at Olivo, a nice little Italian cafe in Guildford, followed by a leisurely walk by the river. Back home we looked at websites about Brasilia (I still want to go sometime next year).

After all this I was far from in the mood to do some cleaning. Valentina felt guilty and scrubbed the bathroom, using every combination of chemicals she could get her hands on. It sparkles. Afterwards we went to see Scooby Doo which we agreed was a lovable romp.

Car was taken away this morning. One load off my mind (and now on the mind of CA Scrap in Liphook).

Some people were shown around the flat this morning. I don’t know if they were interested. They nearly set off the panic alarm.

Valentina here tomorrow midday to help me clean the house. She offered. I think I’ll leave the shampooing of carpets until the weekend after.

I hope I do have email ‘over there’. Without it I think I’d miss my friends too much and get miserable. I don’t believe I normally suffer from home-sickness though (I didn’t when I was in Sweden for 2n+1 months).

Note to self: buy a small padlock at the weekend, having heard a report that travel insurance doesn’t cover you if things are pinched from your luggage by baggage handlers. Said companies demand you claim against the airline, who’s compensation levels were fixed 70 years ago!

Diary now displays timestamps in BST. I never got up that early, in case you wondered :)

Boyf and his friend Rose are going to collect me from outside the Union in Madison. That saves me having to walk two miles to his house :)
I’ve stopped looking for extra terrestrials at home and decided to devote my processing cycles to brute-force analysis of the RC5-64 algorithm. Have a look at my current stats. I’m running it on my Linux machine at home and my Solaris box at work.

It is so HOT! I don’t know how I manage to make it home from work, especially when I’m laden with groceries (currently from M&S as the Sainsbury’s in town is closed for refurbishment). However I gather it’s even hotter in Madison. I hope boyf is OK - he only manages to email about once a week now he has to use other people’s computers.

Breaking news: the IRA have apologised for all the civilian deaths they’ve caused over the years. Wow.

Further issues with DOS killed off the site again this morning. All fixed now, we are comfortably assured. However it’ll be down again tomorrow for upgrades. Hmm.

Spoke to Lolo online yesterday. I will make time to see her when I’m in Madison. She now works in Janesville, which is a small town south of Madison.
