I’ve just found an excellent guide to the EU and its organisations on the BBC website. It’s considerably better structured than I thought. If you’re in the UK, find out who your MEP is and write to them! Also get involved with the 2004 Convention on the Future of the EU. Have a look here too.

On the other side of the globe, here’s a site about Madison. I really can’t wait to go - my mind really won’t be on the new project kickoff at work next week.

Things have been moving alternately quickly and slowly over the past few days.

Had a row with my mother last night over my plan to decamp to the US for three months. I felt bad afterwards and it seems so did she, as she phoned again today to say she could understand I needed to do what I felt was right. I’m going to see her next weekend and her birthday is on the following Monday.

Started packing and dismantling furniture. My car has died and the plan to move stuff to Daryl’s house today died with it. I called a scrap dealer in Liphook and they’re going to take it away weekend after next, charging me

Email from boyf: hot weather in Madison and the mosquitos are out in force. This is not good - mozzies go after me in droves.

Planning to fly out on 3rd August. This is provisional.

The desk phones at work are all being replaced with mobiles. Apparently it’s a cost saving.

Gas man never arrived - grr!

Notice given on flat. I may be gone by 31st July. Gosh, so much to do in such a short time. However, it’s possible I could get out of paying the second month’s rent if they find someone to take it over quickly.

I’m at home (early) waiting for the Gas Man to read my meter and correct an on-going saga that started when the previous occupant sent in his final reading from next door’s meter.

While I wait, I listen to ‘Aurora’ by Red Heat, who is a guy that works in Ericsson Netherlands and who I used to converse with frequently over internal Ericsson IRC before I moved sideways.

Fairly productive day at the British Museum. I was disappointed that ‘Greek & Roman’ seemed to have far more Greek than Roman. Also some sections (specifically the one on Roman inscriptions) were only open for a few hours per day and I couldn’t be bothered to wait. Oh well, at least it’s free and was very busy. The Great Court is always worth seeing too.

I stopped off at the British Library, mainly to ogle the architecture. I wasn’t disappointed - I thought it was fantastic! Nuts to the critics.

On the way to London by train, we paused at Woking while the the station staff chased after a naked man who was about to be charged by the Police with ‘travelling unclothed on public transport’. It’s one of those crimes that never occurs to you. Much hilarity on the train when he ran past - a number of women gave their ‘opinion’ of him.

Must use the word ‘panjandrum’ more in conversation.

Comedy situation with Intelligent Finance. I wrote to them about a month ago cancelling my credit card. Having heard nothing I phoned them up and asked why.

Them: Your account has been closed.
Me: Well, why didn’t you tell me?
Them: It’s company policy not to tell we’ve actually done it.
Me: Then how am I supposed to know it’s closed?
Them: Your next statement would have a zero balance.
Me: But I haven’t used my card for some months, so the balance would be zero anyway…
Them: *silence*

I’ve decided, in only the last half-hour, to go to the British Museum tomorrow. I think I’ll concentrate on Roman and Greek antiquities - a period of history I’ve always been interested in. It’ll be nice to not have to drag someone around with me who isn’t really interested. However, I must resist the temptation to buy loads of stuff from the shop…

Mmm…

OK, maybe only one book but no more - I’m trying to save money for sorting out costs here and starting new costs in the USA. It looks like my airline ticket will be

England lost against Brazil and are out of the World Cup. It’s fairly subdued here.

It’s Valentina’s birthday today too - she must be on cloud nine (she’s Brazilian, if you didn’t know).

Boyf has gone quiet email-wise. Apparently his computer has a virus so he has to use the ones at the library.

Yay! The Government have abandoned their evil RIPA extension order. It’s good to see that such pressure can work - I hope it’s the start of an invigorated era of citizen’s rights.

Next Monday is ‘go for it’ day.

Just received my Sainsbury’s To You home delivery. It came within the alotted time and of the 52 items I’d ordered:

  • 1 wasn’t available
  • 2 were missed completely
  • 7 were substituted

The substitutions were surprisingly intelligent so I only had to send back two. On the whole I was comfortably impressed. Nothing got squished, frozen stuff was separated out and bags with substitutions were labelled. This could even become I regular thing (if I were staying, that is).

The RIPA extension bill debate has been put back a week. Write to your MP now!

Been investigating self-storage companies. Scary.
